Who is it suitable for?

This qualification will be suitable for teaching staff, care staff or anyone looking to build their knowledge of dyslexia and other learning difficulties.

The qualification would be suitable for those working within healthcare, social care and education contexts.

Gain knowledge and understanding

Having a learning difficulty means that people find it harder to learn certain skills.

As this affects around 15% of people, it is important for those working in healthcare, social care and education to have knowledge of different Specific Learning Difficulties such as ADHD, dyslexia and dyscalculia.

By completing this qualification, you will gain knowledge of several different Specific Learning Difficulties, how they are diagnosed and how individuals can be supported.

You will develop an understanding of the positive aspects and strengths or individuals with Specific Learning Difficulties in addition to exploring the barriers they may face.

Occupational Therapist – up to £26,390
Higher Level Teaching Assistant – up to £25,000

Course units

Learners are required to successfully complete 5 mandatory units.

01: Understand Specific Learning Difficulties

In this unit learners will gain an understanding of what is meant by Specific Learning Difficulties. They will research the characteristics of different difficulties and co-occurring conditions.

They will also gain an understanding of common misconceptions and how the difficulty is a lifelong condition.

02: Understand the effects of Specific Learning Difficulties

In this unit learners will gain an understanding of how Specific Learning Difficulties affect an individual’s life and those of others.

They will also understand how the attitudes of others can impact the individual. Learners will identify the strengths and barriers an individual may experience and how this can impact them.

03: Understand the diagnosis of Specific Learning Difficulties

In this unit learners will understand the importance of gaining an early diagnosis and the impact of delayed or non-diagnosis.

They will also investigate the diagnosis process and the professionals involved.

04: Understanding supporting individuals with Specific Learning Difficulties

In this unit learners will understand how to support an individual with a Specific Learning Difficulty in different settings. They will gain an understanding of different coping strategies and assistive technology that can be used to support an individual.

They will also understand the roles of professionals in providing support.

05: Understand the context of Specific Learning Difficulties

In this unit learners will understand how attitudes, legislation and services have evolved over time to support individuals with Specific Learning Difficulties.

They will outline relevant legislation, polices and guidance and understand how these are implemented to support individuals.

Get certified

Gain a nationally recognised level 2 accredited certificate.

Eligibility

Location

Been in the UK or EU for three years for purposes other than study.

Age

19+ at the start of the academic year.

Qualifications

Not on an apprenticeship.
Not completed any part of the course before.
19-23-year-olds must have a level 2 or higher prior to attainment.
